Iranian president rejects USA 'threats, arrogance'

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump speak at Trump's Mar-a Lago resort in Palm Beach after North Korea reportedly fired a ballistic missile

The rallies come at a time when new U.S. President Donald Trump has already engaged in a war of words with Iran's leadership and put Tehran "on notice" over a recent ballistic missile test. The people of Iran who gathered to celebrate the occasion had responded to a call from their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who wanted his citizens to demonstrate that Iran was not frightened of threats posed by the U.S.

President Hassan Rouhani said nationwide rallies are "a response" to anti-Iran remarks coming out of the White House. Anyone confronting Iran will "regret" their aggressive policies, said Rouhani, a moderate who was elected president in 2013.

Tehran has maintained that its missile program is for self-defense only and does not violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that "calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology".

"America and Trump can not do a damn thing".

Some demonstrators tried to differentiate between the United States political leadership and the American people. Iran is an independent country like the United States.

Protestors swore allegiance to Iran's religious elite in response to a call from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that Tehran is not shaken by US "threats", Reuters reported.

Some people threw balls and darts targeting pictures of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On social media, like Twitter and Facebook, many Iranians used the hashtag of #LoveBeyondFlags, urging an end to flag-burning during the anniversary.

Participants in the march were invited to step on the faces of Trump which was laid on the ground next to United States and Israeli flags respectively.

In reaction, Iranian officials unanimously described the missile test as an "inalienable right" of the country to boost its deterrent power.

While thousands of Iranians chanted against Trump, many also thanked USA citizens who opposed Trump's executive order banning travelers from seven mostly Muslim countries, including Iran. "In short, our challenge is to materialize complete republicanism and Islamism", the Iranian President told crowds. "American people are welcome and invited to visit Iran", said one sign.

In his rally speech, Rouhani defended the nuclear deal that lifted key sanctions against his nation previous year.

"We believe that the nations [of the world] should have ties with each other.in a bid to safeguard their common interests", the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Rouhani as saying.
