Promises over Commons vote on final Brexit deal dismissed as 'fig leaf'

Opposition legislators want to amend legislation authorizing the start of European Union exit talks, seeking to ensure they get a say on the final deal.

The spokeswoman added: "The Government has a very clear approach, it has a mandate from the British people for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union and to carry out that decision".

The first vote on the many amendments was won by the Government, with 333 voting against amending the bill to allow MPs to scrutinise the details at regular intervals - compared to 284 who wanted the scrutiny powers.

Mr Jones said: "If there were no agreement at all, which is a scenario I think is extremely unlikely, then ultimately it would be falling back upon World Trade Organisation arrangements".

The decision to impose a three-line whip before knowing if the changes demanded by Labour are successfully added to the bill risks forcing the resignation of Mr Lewis.

Brexit minister David Jones MP told the House of Commons that Parliament would be able to approve the deal "before it is concluded" and before the European Parliament votes on it.

And Downing Street played down suggestions that it amounted to a concession to potential Conservative rebels, insisting that it merely clarified the timing of the vote promised by Mrs May in her Lancaster House speech last month. It means he could be forced to sack Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary who did not vote on Article 50 last week because she said she had a migraine.

The Brexit spokesman from Labour, the main opposition, said it was a "very significant" concession.

The move makes it easier for the government to clinch a Brexit deal without much trouble from the parliament.

Mr Tyrie said he was "minded" to vote against the Government because of concerns about the Government's promises to give a vote.

And Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas said: "MPs must not be duped by the Government's attempt to quell unrest on their backbenches".

Nicky Morgan, the former education secretary, was among those to abstain, sitting resolutely on the government benches, next to a whip trying to persuade her to vote.
