French election: Le Pen declares candidacy, attacks globalization

The 48-year-old National Front leader was forced to speak over applause and cries of "we are in our land" as she detailed her plans to fight globalisation and radical Islam.

These two subjects have received persistent critics from Le Pen and the FN. Macron's message is one of cautiously continuing to be an open country participating with the rest of Europe. No more, she vows. The election will be held on April 23.

As Fillon sinks, Le Pen's opponent is now likely to be independent center-left candidate Emmanuel Macron - previously running in a distant third place. She argues that both are at odds with France's secular and Western identity.

The National Front leader's statements carry additional weight now that she is seeking her country's presidency, officially launching her candidacy Sunday with a speech attacking globalization. It is a sentiment she has long expressed.

Le Pen sad: "Faced with the cash-rich rightwing and the cash-rich leftwing, only I am he candidate for the people".

However, Le Pen is expected to lose the second, decisive, round of voting.

Her remarks against Muslim immigration were met with cheers and chants of "On est chez nous", meaning "We are in our land", from the crowd of roughly 5,000.

Not unlike Trump, Le Pen laid out an agenda that included massive restrictions on immigration coupled with measures to isolate France economically, such as leaving the Eurozone and holding a referendum on European Union membership. One plank of her campaign is what the FN calls a "return to monetary sovereignty". She said that she would travel to Brussels to discuss different subjects like borders and currency, as she is sure that other countries will follow France's initiative.

Le Pen is also under investigation for funneling more than $300,000 in salaries for National Front staff, including a personal bodyguard, though she has refused orders requiring her to repay the money.

A French exit from the European Union would be far messier than the departure Britain is preparing to negotiate. And she has made several overt outreach attempts to the Jewish community, with limited success. In 1987, he was fined for proclaiming that Nazi gas chambers were "a detail of World War II history". As well, a close below here today would be the first close below the 10-day EMA since January 4.

In 2016, Marine very publicly distanced herself from her father because of his rhetoric about the Holocaust. She also pledged to pull France out of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Though Le Pen and others may view Trump as a potential ally in defying globalism and Europeanism, the rank and file still see him as a prototypical boorish American. "It sets the conditions for another form of globalization: Islamist fundamentalism".

The chances of him changing his mind and going on to win are now put at 100-to-1, where a 1 pound ($1.25) bet would pay out 100 pounds. "Her supporters, buoyed by the FN's move into the mainstream amid rising Euroscepticism, anti-immigration sentiment, and terror fears, have been heartened by the shock votes for Brexit and Donald Trump". She likes the comparison.
