Trump's army secretary nominee Vincent Viola withdraws as candidate

Businessman Vincent Viola arrives at Trump Tower for meetings with President-elect Donald Trump

Vincent Viola, the billionaire founder of trading firm Virtu Financial Inc., and owner of the Florida Panthers, has withdrawn his nomination to be Secretary of the Army after distancing himself from his business ties proved too hard.

"I appreciate the confidence President Trump showed in me", Viola said.

In a statement, Viola, a West Point graduate, said overcoming the ethical conflicts had "proven insurmountable".

Viola, a U.S. Army infantry officer and the founder and chairman of Virtu Financial, announced in December after being nominated that the Panthers would remain in his family's control if he was approved by the Senate.

The report says those businesses are the reason for him withdrawing.

Viola, who also owns the NHL Florida Panthers, was set to give up a majority stake in that airline and purchase a smaller stake in Swift Air.

Mr Viola's decision to withdraw comes the same week another of Mr. Trump's appointees, Anthony Scaramucci, was told he could not get a top White House job amid concerns about the recent sale of his company to a large Chinese conglomerate.

Vincent Viola apparently dropped out from being considered for Army secretary Friday night.

Viola served in the 101st Airborne Division and has repeatedly said his time in the military has shaped all facets of his civilian life.

Viola has donated more than $10 million to the U.S. Military Academy and funded the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.
