Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner behind withdrawal of religious freedom executive order

Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner allegedly persuaded Donald Trump to scrap an Executive Order that would have rolled back LGBT rights. "The President is proud to have been the first ever GOP nominee to mention the LGBTQ community in his nomination acceptance speech, pledging then to protect the community from violence and oppression".

'There are some in Trump's family that have some views on these things, ' a source told Politico. "That's where the decision is ultimately being made".

Trump was never exactly close to signing it - indeed, the order was never meant to be signed, White House officials told Politico.

A draft order had been circulating, outlining plans to overturn measures dating back to 2014, protecting federal workers from anti-LGBTQ discrimination.

"President Donald J. Trump is determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community", it reads.

"There's clearly a lot of evidence in the last couple of years of the government coming in with regulations and policies that have, frankly, denied people the ability to live according to their faith", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said February 2.

The draft executive order had circulated earlier this week before Ivanka and Kushner expressed a preference for releasing a statement, Politico reported.

But only a day later, a draft of a sweeping "religious freedom" executive order making it legal to discriminate against LGBTI people and others surfaced.

Mr. Kushner, a lifelong Democrat, and Ms. Trump, an independent, travel in liberal social circles and have long supported L.G.B.T. rights.

In a statement put out shortly after the order was leaked, the Trump administration said: 'The executive order signed in 2014, which protects employees from anti-LGBTQ workplace discrimination while working for federal contractors, will remain intact at the direction of President Donald J. Trump'.

"But on this one, our base is wondering why Obama's executive order would be allowed to stand?"

"I feel confident that they have an appreciation of religious freedom, and I'm pretty certain they're going to address it", said Family Research Council head Tony Perkins.
