Protests in Berkeley, Ca. over speech by Breitbart journalist turn violent

The event was cancelled after demonstrators threw smoke bombs and flares at the building, the Associated Press and local media reported.

Steve Bannon, now chief strategist and senior adviser to Trump, is the former head of Breitbart.

Labelled by mainstream media as a "political provocateur", Yiannopulos began touring US universities past year. "We deeply regret that the violence unleashed by this group undermined the First Amendment rights of the speaker as well as those who came to lawfully assemble and protest his presence". "We shut shit down".

Protesters marched down the street with banners reading, "Become Ungovernable" and "This Is War". "One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down".

Another protester, Lana Wachowski, said extreme tactics were necessary to deny Yiannopolous a platform. Bennet said her officers "exercised tremendous restraint" in order to protect students. "There's something to be said for fighting according to a code, but if you lose, people are going to die".

The crowd was boisterous but peaceful until about 6pm when a group of black-clad students with black face masks carrying glittering flags arrived. Some of them also smashed windows.

Michelle Malkin appeared on "Hannity" tonight to react to the chaos that broke out at the University of California-Berkeley over a scheduled speaking speech by conservative activist and journalist Milo Yiannopoulos. Here is a pic I got after the speech cancelation of almost 100 SWAT and campus police sitting inside the student union building doing NOTHING while people were getting beaten outside.

"The violence was sparked by anarchist groups on campus who invaded an otherwise peaceful student-run event", he later wrote.

"That is the price you pay for being a libertarian or a conservative on American college campuses", Yiannopoulos said Thursday night on Fox News.

The tour racked up cancellations, protests, and even a shooting.

Chancellor Nicholas Dirks of the University of California, Berkeley, tried Thursday to distance the public university from violence during a protest the previous evening that turned a radical far-right political figure away from making a speech on campus.

At least one person could be seen with blood on his face, according to Buzzfeed News. Police ordered the crowds to disperse, and the school was put on lockdown.

Last year, the U.C. Berkeley received more than $2oo million oriented to a program of student fund aid, supported by the Congress.

Members of the UC staff who Newsom has spoken with are "disgusted by this", he said, describing it as the fourth or fifth action by the president they've had to respond to in just a week.

The notion of free speech is becoming an increasing point of emphasis and contention on college campuses and beyond.
