Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman Set To Appear In Brooklyn Court

Infamous drug kingpin "El Chapo" has been granted his wish and will appear in Brooklyn Federal Court in person Friday, a federal judge has ruled.

A United States judge initially ruled that Guzman, 59, would appear in court by video, but the order was changed after his attorneys asked the court to reconsider.

At the hearing, defense lawyers complained to U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan that the restrictions make it hard for him to make decisions with them about how to fight the charges.

To get Mexico to hand him over to the US, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.

Guzman's public defenders asked Judge Brian Cogan permission for Coronel to visit her husband at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, but Cogan declined to intervene, saying it was up to the jail which has already denied it.

Guzman smiled at his common-law wife, Emma Coronel, as he was led into the Brooklyn courtroom under heavy guard by deputy USA marshals at his second court appearance since being brought to the United States on January 19. WATCH: Video of "El Chapo" leaving Manhattan for Brooklyn court:On Friday morning, Guzman was taken from jail in Lower Manhattan to federal court in downtown Brooklyn in a 12-car caravan that shut down the outbound Brooklyn Bridge for 15 minutes. His lawyers said he's on a 23-hour lockdown in a special jail unit.

"We understand the need for security but we think it has gone above and beyond", said Michelle Gelernt, one of Guzman's court-appointed lawyers.

Guzman is due back in court May 5. Prosecutors are urging tight security around the materials, but the defense said restrictions on evidence were "over broad".

Guzman faces charges in six USA jurisdictions after years running the Sinaloa Cartel, which prosecutors said was responsible for some $14 billion in narcotics trafficking and numerous drug-related killings under Guzman's leadership.

According to Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) Guzman may also be prosecuted in the U.S. states of Texas and California on charges of organized crime, possession of weapons, money laundering and drug offenses. He has pleaded not guilty.

His next hearing was set for May 10.

Guzman escaped from the Altiplano maximum security prison on July 11, 2015, using an underground tunnel. He was later captured in January 2016. He said he would defer to prison officials and the marshals.
