First Quantum Computer Prototype Build in UK

Google collaborates with other organizations on the bluprint of the biggest quantum computer in the world

Instead of typical computer "bits" that can represent either the value "0" or "1", quantum computers use "qubits" (short for quantum bits) that are capable of representing either "1" or "0", or both at the same time. In addition to the University of Sussex, other participating organizations include Google, Aarhus University, RIKEN and Siegen University. With this approach, connection speed becomes 100,000 times faster.

Professor Winfried Hensinger, who is the Head of the Ion Quantum Technology Group at Sussex University, has been leading the project with an worldwide group of scientist to develop the most powerful computers known on Earth.

A team of global researchers have taken us one step closer to the quantum age with the release of the first ever blueprint for a large scale quantum computer.

But it is also this particular state that makes quantum computers hard to build.

The blueprint has been published through the journal Science Advances.

But the innovation introduces connections created by electric fields, which facilitate the transport of ions (charged atoms) from one module to another, reports the note.

Once built, the computer's capabilities mean it would have the potential to answer many questions in science; create new, lifesaving medicines; solve the most mind-boggling scientific problems; unravel the yet unknown mysteries of the furthest reaches of deepest space; and solve some problems that an ordinary computer would take billions of years to compute. If successfully built, the quantum computer can open doors for many industries in science and technology.

Before this progress, the scientist proposed the use of optic fiber for the connection between each module. "With our work we have not only shown that it can be done but now we are delivering a nuts and bolts construction plan to build an actual large-scale machine".

We won't be seeing quantum computers in our homes or offices anytime soon, but the machine that Hensinger and his colleagues are working on will be used at an industrial scale. Without doubt it is still challenging to build a large-scale machine, but now is the time to translate academic excellence into actual application building on the UK's strengths in this ground-breaking technology. Based on the blueprint, the team plans to build a prototype quantum computer. "I am very excited to work with industry and government to make this happen".

A prototype is the next phase, and although the funding the team has received from the United Kingdom government is aimed at promoting quantum computing in the industrial sector, the ramifications of a working, full-speed machine could potentially be felt across humankind. Although quantum computing systems have been devised using a variety of technologies, scaling these designs up to more practical size has been a major challenge.
