Bannon, Priebus Meet with Australian Ambassador After Refugee Agreement Flap

The furore erupted on Wednesday when the Washington Post reported Mr Trump abruptly ended the planned hour call after 25 minutes.

US President Donald Trump dispatched two top advisers to reassure Australia's ambassador of American support for a decades-old alliance, amid reports of his angry criticism of a refugee resettlement deal in a heated telephone call.

She said Mr. Turnbull went into the conversation with the mentality that "to confront a bully, you need to bully back". The Obama Administration agreed to take in thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? "I will study this dumb deal".

United States senator John McCain has described President Donald Trump's fiery phone conversation with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as "unnecessary and frankly harmful".

According to the Post, Trump told the Australian leader the conversation was the "worst call" with a world leader of Trump's day.

The president said Mr Turnbull was looking to export the "next Boston bombers" to the USA, the newspaper said, and ended the call abruptly after 25 minutes.

Despite the hostility of the call, Turnbull went public with his claim that Trump had promised to honour the deal.

Turnbull, however, said the reports of Trump hanging up the phone were not correct and termed his talks with the latte as "very frank and forthright".

The official described Trump as "very strong" in Saturday's call and particularly concerned about the deal.

A day earlier Trump had signed an executive order temporarily blocking all refugees from entering the United States.

Trumps reported negative phone call with Australia comes right after the Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, canceled their scheduled meeting because of a threat Trump fired at him on Twitter.

"Australia is one of America's oldest friends and staunchest allies", the Arizona Republican said in a statement.

Australia has controversially refused to accept them and instead holds them on offshore detention centres on the Pacific nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

On Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the administration would honor the deal but said the refugees would undergo "extreme vetting". The White House says was a violation of the nuclear deal.

The characterizations in the Washington Post's report are unsurprisingly at odds with the version released by the White House.
