BMW and McLaren Join Forces to Make Better Engines

McLaren to partner with BMW on next-gen engine tech

The first time McLaren and BMW came together to make a road-car engine they built this, the S70/2.

Details are scarce, but BMW and McLaren will partner up yet again-this time in designing and developing new engine technology.

The technology is meant to deliver a higher output per capacity than is now possible, according to McLaren.

Yes, burning fuel remains at the heart of McLaren's short- to medium-term plans, as outlined in its Track22 business plan.

The project sees the Woking-based company working in partnership with its current engine partner Ricardo as well as the BMW Group and Grainger & Worrall.

The new collaborative venture between BMW and McLaren is supported and partly funded by the government of the United Kingdom, through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, which will also help improve the UK's abiility to develop and produce low-CO2 internal combustion engine techonology.

'It also aims to further facilitate Carbon dioxide reductions while simultaneously increasing engine output, ' the company said.

BMW has plenty of engine technology in the area of turbocharging and V8 layouts. Lents Composites, meanwhile, will add its knowledge of specialist composite structures to the mix.

Currently, McLaren contracts Ricardo to build its engines, a contract that's good through 2020.

"McLaren Automotive has an exceptional reputation for building the world's finest engines, as showcased by our M838T and its previous category wins in the International Engine of the Year awards", said Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer of McLaren Automotive. Lentus composites and the University of Bath are also involved, and McLaren plans to use the academic institution's research into internal combustion engine efficiency.

McLaren and BMW intend to have engines with higher specific output and lower emissions to ensure that forthcoming emission regulations can be met without sacrificing power and performance. It might be a lot to hope for a screaming motorsports-derived V12, but we can dream.
