DC SPOTS & SANDWICHES

WEEKEND ROUND-UP: Georgetown out of NCAA Tournament, Capitals lose twice

What a weekend? St. Patty’s Day, the NCAA Tournament in full effect and the weather has been great (Cherry Blossoms anyone?). There was so much to do and see. However, it was a weekend to forget for DC sports fans.

In the NCAA Tournament, Georgetown won their opening game against Belmont only to fall to an 11 seed. NC State was able to overcome an early deficit and then hold on in the second half leaving Georgetown fans to lament another early departure.

The professional teams were not much better. The Capitals lost both games this weekend and allowed the teams behind them in the standings to gain ground. Their hold on the final playoff spot now stands at two points with 10 games to play. The game that hurt the most was Friday night against a Winnipeg team that is directly behind them. And the Winnipeg faithful serenaded Alexander Ovechkin to the chant “Crosby’s Better” all night to add insult to injury. The Capitals look to reverse course tonight as they take on the Detroit Red Wings.

The Wizards also lost both games they played this weekend, and they finish up their six game road trip on Wednesday night against the New Jersey Nets. Is it too early to look to next year?

Finally, the DC United went out to the West Coast, and were hosted rudely by the Los Angeles Galaxy. They lost to the defending-MLS champs by a score of 3-1.
